Ogambo

Where memes find their people.

SocialPlatformCommunity

Overview

Ogambo is a meme-sharing platform built on the idea that the best content finds its community, not the other way around. Distribution through resonance, not reach.

The Problem

Meme culture is one of the most efficient forms of human communication ever invented. But the platforms that host it are mostly terrible — either too broad (Instagram, Reddit) or too ephemeral (Telegram groups). Ogambo is a home for it.

Decisions made

Community-first architecture

Content doesn't go to a global feed. It surfaces within communities of shared context. A meme that lands in one community might not even be visible in another. Context is the entire point.

No re-sharing across community boundaries

This was a hard constraint. It keeps the signal clean within a community but limits viral growth. We accepted that trade-off deliberately.

The upload flow had to be near-zero friction

If sharing a meme takes more than three taps, the platform loses to WhatsApp. Entire upload flow designed around three interactions maximum.

What broke.

Moderation at scale is genuinely unsolved. Community self-moderation works until it doesn't — and the failure modes are ugly. We underestimated how much infrastructure honest moderation requires.

If I rebuilt it.

The community boundary system was right but the implementation was too rigid. I'd build flexible, overlapping communities with explicit membership rather than passive algorithmic grouping.
